Temari (¥Æ¥Þ¥ê?) is a fictional character in the anime and manga series Naruto created by Masashi Kishimoto. She is the oldest child of the Fourth Kazekage, making her the older sister of Gaara and Kankuro.

The word "temari" can also refer to a Japanese folk art.

Personality

Although she appears quite frequently, Temari's role throughout the series has primarily consisted of her participation in battles. As such, her personality is left largely unexplored. What is seen of her personality in Part I shows her to be fairly hostile to her opponents, and she doesn't hesitate to do what is necessary to win a battle. This trait carries over somewhat to her interactions with others as she is generally overbearing, if not crude, toward those around her, often not being afraid to speak her mind. Despite this, Temari does have a caring side, and is not above showing concern for others. She also seems to value the peace, and questions Sunagakure's justifications for going to war with Konoha.

In Part II, Temari begins acting as a liaison between Sunagakure and Konohagakure as the two villages prepare for the next Chunin Exam. Like Kankuro, her relations with Gaara have greatly improved, though she is not nearly as close to Gaara as Kankuro now is. Upon learning that Gaara has been kidnapped by Akatsuki, Temari rushes to Sunagakure to see how she can help save her brother. When she finds that Kankuro has been poisoned, she watches over him until he is able to move about and the two join together to help look for Gaara. Once Gaara is found and saved, Temari joins Kankuro in thanking Team 7 for saving their brother.

Oddly, many of Temari's appearances are associated with Shikamaru Nara. The two face each other during the final matches of the Chunin Exams, where Shikamaru forfeits his match instead of defeating Temari. Temari later comes to his aid during the Sasuke Retrieval arc and defeats Tayuya to save him. Shikamaru returns the favor in the last of the anime's filler arcs and saves her from one of the Shiitenshounin. In addition, the two are seen together in their Part II debuts. In this instance, Naruto Uzumaki asks if the two are on a date, though both make it clear that this is not the case.

Temari is a keen analyst, and can easily deduce an opponent's strategies and weaknesses soon after a battle begins. For actual combat she uses her giant iron fan that, in addition to serving as a makeshift club, can be used to glide upon in order to intimidate her foes. Inscribed on her fan are three purple circles spaced equally across its length, which she calls "stars" ("moons" in the English dub). As she opens the fan to reveal each star in sequence, the fan's power increases greatly.

Once all three stars are revealed, Temari can use her Cutting Whirlwind Technique (¥«¥Þ¥¤¥¿¥Á¤ÎÐg Kamaitachi no Jutsu?, English TV "Wind Scythe Jutsu") or the more powerful Great Cutting Whirlwind Technique (´ó¥«¥Þ¥¤¥¿¥Á¤ÎÐg Daikamaitachi no Jutsu?) to create slicing whirlwinds. Because she can guide these forces with her chakra, she can easily use them to attack her opponents from great distances. Temari's fan is also capable of creating tornadoes, and with her Wind Release: Severing Pressure ( Futon: Tatsu no Oshigoto?) she can trap opponents and cut them in the process. In addition, her fan can be used to catch opponents off guard, and with Dust Wind Technique (‰m¤ÎïL¤ÎÐg F¨±sajin no Jutsu?, English TV "Sand Storm Jutsu") she can create a wind current to blanket the area in dust, making it difficult for an opponent to stand once it has settled.

Temari can also summon Kamatari, a one-eyed weasel summoned with her fan. Kamatari serves to aid her in battle, particularly by creating strong gusts of wind to attack her opponents. Over the timeskip, Temari rises to the rank of Jonin, indicating that she has put a great deal of effort into honing her abilities.
